Missouri is home to thousands of natural springs. In fact, more than almost anywhere else in the country. Many emerge from deep underground, creating the brilliant blue and emerald-green water that makes the Ozarks so unforgettable.
From famous springs like Alley Spring and Bennett Spring to lesser-known gems tucked away in the hills, these are some of our favorite places to slow down, explore, and enjoy Missouri at its clearest.

Alley Spring
Where You'll Find It: Near Eminence, Missouri
With its iconic red mill, brilliant blue spring, and one of the most photographed views in the Ozarks, Alley Spring is the kind of place that makes you stop in your tracks. It's peaceful, picturesque, and one of those destinations you'll likely want to visit more than once.
About Alley Spring
Located within Ozark National Scenic Riverways, Alley Spring is one of Missouri's largest natural springs, sending an incredible volume of crystal-clear, 57-degree water bubbling from beneath the limestone every day. The vivid blue color comes from the depth and purity of the spring, creating a scene that almost looks too beautiful to be real.
The historic Alley Mill, built in 1894, overlooks the spring and remains one of Missouri's most recognizable landmarks.
Together, the spring, mill, and surrounding forest create one of the most photographed locations in the state.
Whether you're interested in Ozark history, photography, or simply enjoying a quiet afternoon outdoors, Alley Spring delivers all three beautifully.

✔️ The historic Alley Mill is open seasonally and is well worth exploring if it's open during your visit.
✔️ The spring is just a short, easy walk from the parking area, making it accessible for most visitors.
✔️ For the best view, hike the Alley Overlook Trail. The climb is moderate, but the overlook rewards you with one of the most spectacular views in the Ozarks. The stone overlook was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1934 during Roosevelt's New Deal.
✔️ I recommend trekking poles for the overlook trail. Most of the hike is comfortable, but there are a few narrow sections where the extra stability is nice to have.
✔️ Don't forget your National Park Passport. You can get an official stamp at the visitor area, and there are usually stickers and souvenirs available as well.

Yes, the spring is gorgeous from ground level, but seeing the brilliant blue water and historic red mill from high above is a view you'll remember long after you leave. Take your time on the climb, enjoy the scenery, and don't forget your camera.

Alley Spring isn't just beautiful, it's both peaceful and exciting in a way that's hard to put into words.
The constant sound of water flowing from the spring, the towering trees, and the winding paths invite you to slow down and simply enjoy where you are. You can wander around the mill, stroll along the spring branch, or find a quiet place to sit and watch the water tumble toward the Jacks Fork River.
This is one of those places where you don't feel the need to rush. You simply soak it all in.

Bennett Spring State Park
Where You'll Find It: Near Lebanon, Missouri
Bennett Spring State Park is more than just one of Missouri's famous trout parks. It's a place where generations of families have come to fish, hike, camp, and simply enjoy a slower pace of life. With crystal-clear spring water, historic CCC architecture, cozy cabins, and a welcoming small-town atmosphere, it's easy to understand why so many visitors return year after year.
About Bennett Spring State Park
At the heart of the park is Bennett Spring, one of Missouri's largest natural springs, producing millions of gallons of crystal-clear water each day. The spring forms a beautiful stream that winds through the park before joining the Niangua River, creating one of the premier trout fishing destinations in the Midwest.
But even if you've never held a fishing rod, there's plenty to enjoy. And if you're into float trips, there are canoe and kayak rentals for the Niangua River.
Historic stone buildings constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps blend beautifully into the landscape, while paved walkways lead visitors past the trout hatchery, quiet pools, shaded picnic areas, and peaceful stretches of flowing water. Add in hiking trails, a campground, cabins, a lodge, restaurant, and visitor center, and Bennett Spring feels less like a park and more like a welcoming little community tucked into the Ozarks.

If you can, spend the night, Bennett Spring is lovely as a day trip, but it's even better when you slow down for a couple of days. Wake up with a cup of coffee, take a peaceful morning walk along the spring branch, and enjoy the quiet before the fishermen head to the water. It's one of my favorite winter getaways.

Make It a Day Trip (or a Weekend!) 🏕️
If you're staying for the weekend, don't miss the opportunity to explore the nearby town of Lebanon. It's just a short drive away and offers plenty of restaurants and shopping. If you're there on a Friday evening, ask around about the local all-you-can-eat catfish dinner—it's a favorite with both locals and visitors.
And if Sunday morning finds you still in the area, consider attending country churches right in Bennett Springs. It's a wonderful way to experience the warm hospitality that makes this part of Missouri feel so special and the history there is very unique.

Producing millions of gallons of crystal-clear water each day, Maramec Spring is one of Missouri's largest and most beautiful springs. The brilliant blue-green water flows from the base of the bluff before winding through the park, creating a peaceful setting filled with trout, towering trees, historic buildings, and shaded walking paths.
Unlike some springs that require a hike to reach, Maramec Spring is wonderfully accessible. Paved pathways make it easy to stroll beside the water, stop for photos, or simply sit on a bench and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Roaring River State Park
Where You'll Find It: Near Cassville, Missouri
Tucked into the rolling hills of southwest Missouri, Roaring River State Park is home to one of the state's most spectacular natural springs. With impossibly blue water, peaceful walking paths, towering bluffs, and one of Missouri's premier trout streams, it's a destination that leaves a lasting impression long after you head home.

Roaring River Spring is one of Missouri's largest springs, emerging from the mouth of a massive limestone cavern, where the spring seems to disappear into darkness before reappearing as one of the bluest pools in Missouri. Standing at the spring, it's easy to see why the water has become legendary. The incredible depth of the spring gives it a rich sapphire-blue color that's almost impossible to capture in a photograph.
A short, paved walkway leads visitors to the spring, making this one of the easiest places to experience one of Missouri's greatest natural wonders. Along the way, interpretive signs explain the remarkable geology of the spring and the tremendous volume of water flowing from deep beneath the Ozarks.
If you look closely into the crystal-clear water, you'll often spot large trout quietly gliding through the deep blue pool. Seeing fish suspended in water this clear is part of what makes Roaring River Spring so unforgettable that it almost feels like you're looking into another world.

Where You'll Find It: Near Dora, Missouri
Hidden in a quiet Ozark valley, Hodgson Mill is one of those places that's easy to drive right past, but once you've discovered it, you'll wonder how you never knew it existed. With a picturesque red mill, crystal-clear spring water, and a rushing waterfall emerging from beneath a towering bluff, it's one of Missouri's true hidden gems.

One of the first things you'll notice isn't what you see; it's what you hear.
As soon as you step out of your vehicle, the sound of rushing water fills the valley. Your first instinct is to wonder, "Where is all that water coming from?"
Then you follow the sound.
Almost magically, crystal-clear spring water appears from beneath a massive limestone bluff before tumbling over the rocks beside the historic mill. It's one of those moments that makes you stop, smile, and simply appreciate the incredible geology of the Ozarks.
The historic red mill has become one of the most photographed grist mills in Missouri, and it's easy to see why. The vibrant red building, emerald-green grass, rushing water, and towering limestone bluff create a scene that looks like it belongs on a postcard.

Round Spring holds a special place in my heart because it was the very first Missouri spring I ever visited.
I came here shortly after graduating from high school, and it completely changed how I thought about Missouri. Until then, I had no idea places like this existed in our own backyard.
The spring is beautiful, but pairing it with a day floating the crystal-clear Current River makes the experience unforgettable. It's one of those places that quietly turns first-time visitors into lifelong fans of the Ozarks.

Greer Spring
Where You'll Find It: Near Alton, Missouri
Hidden deep within the Ozarks, Greer Spring is one of Missouri's true hidden treasures. Reaching it requires a hike, but every step rewards you with rushing water, towering bluffs, moss-covered rocks, and some of the most beautiful scenery you'll find anywhere in the state.
About Greer Spring
Greer Spring is Missouri's second-largest spring, sending an astonishing amount of crystal-clear water from a massive cave before it begins its journey toward the Eleven Point River. Unlike many of Missouri's springs that are just a short walk from a parking lot, Greer asks you to earn the view—and that's part of what makes it so memorable.
The hike itself is every bit as enjoyable as the destination.
As the trail winds through the forest, you'll cross little streams, pass beneath towering hardwoods, and round one beautiful bend after another. By the time you reach the spring, it feels like you've wandered into one of Missouri's best-kept secrets.
The nearby Greer Mill is worth visiting as well. Although it isn't located right beside the spring itself, it's another fascinating piece of Ozark history and makes a wonderful addition to your day in the area.
