About Rocky Falls
Rocky Falls is one of Missouri's most spectacular waterfalls, where clear water cascades over ancient volcanic rock surrounded by the beauty of the Ozarks. It's an easy stop that's well worth the visit and this is especially true after a good rain.
Good to Know
✔️ Swimming is allowed and is a popular way to cool off during the summer.
✔️ The last stretch of road is gravel.
✔️ Parking is limited, but close, so weekdays are much more enjoyable than busy weekends.
✔️ Once you turn onto the rutted gravel & dirt road, there are very few places to turn around, so drive carefully and be prepared to continue to the falls.

Bring your swimsuit, a towel, and a picnic lunch. This is one of those places where you'll probably end up staying longer than you planned.

Maramec Spring Park
Where You'll Find It: Near St. James, Missouri
Nestled in the Ozarks, Maramec Spring Park is one of Missouri's most peaceful destinations, where crystal-clear spring water, historic landmarks, and shaded walking paths come together in one unforgettable setting.
About Maramec Spring Park
Maramec Spring Park is home to one of Missouri's largest natural springs, producing millions of gallons of remarkably clear water every day. The spring feeds a lively stream filled with trout, while paved walking paths wind past gentle cascades, historic buildings, towering trees, and inviting park benches that practically beg you to slow down and stay awhile. Whether you're visiting for the scenery, the history, or simply a relaxing afternoon outdoors, this is one of those places that's easy to return to again and again.

✔️ There is a small entrance fee to enter the park.
✔️ The walking paths are paved, making this an excellent choice for visitors looking for an easy stroll with little to no incline.
✔️ Parking is convenient and located close to many of the park's highlights.
✔️ A trout hatchery is located within the park, and you'll often spot large trout swimming in the spring-fed waters.
✔️ This is a popular destination, especially on weekends, so don't expect complete solitude.

Bring your camera because with all the eye candy here, you're gonna want to take lots of pics (don't forget a few selfies to prove you were there!).
Between the vivid blue spring water, roaring cascades, historic buildings and the old brick and iron ruins, and way cool and really pretty trees, you'll find yourself stopping every few minutes to snap another photo.

Maramec Spring Park has a way of making the rest of the world fade away.
The cool spring water, the sound of rushing cascades, and the shade of the towering trees create a peaceful atmosphere that's hard to describe until you've experienced it yourself. Even with other visitors nearby, the sound of the water somehow quiets the world around you.
It's one of those places where it's easy to find a bench, sit for a while, and simply let God's creation refresh your soul.

Parkville Nature Sanctuary Waterfall
Where You'll Find It: Parkville, Missouri
Just minutes northwest of downtown Kansas City, Parkville Nature Sanctuary offers a peaceful woodland escape tucked surprisingly close to the city. The waterfall trail is one of the sanctuary's most popular features, but it's only the beginning of what you'll discover here.
About the Waterfall
After a rainy week, the waterfall at Parkville Nature Sanctuary becomes especially impressive as water tumbles over the rocky ledge into a quiet stream below. The walk to the falls takes only about ten minutes and follows a shaded creek with charming wooden bridges, gentle elevation changes, and plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the scenery.
While many visitors come just for the waterfall, the sanctuary's network of trails invites you to wander much farther.

✔️ The waterfall is at its most impressive after periods of steady rainfall.
✔️ The walk to the falls is short and suitable for most visitors, with only gentle hills and several picturesque bridges.
✔️ Dogs are not permitted within the sanctuary.
✔️ Parking is free and conveniently located near the trailhead.
✔️ Spring and early summer offer lush greenery, while autumn transforms the trails into a colorful woodland escape.

Don't stop at the waterfall.
Take a little extra time to explore the rest of the sanctuary. This 200-acre preserve was once a working farm, and if you keep wandering, you'll discover fascinating reminders of its past, which you find in the old stone foundations and a historic potato cellar that's labeled and allows you to take a look among the trees.
Those little discoveries are part of what makes this place so memorable.

Parkville Nature Sanctuary feels like one of Missouri's best-kept secrets.
It's hard to believe you're only minutes from Kansas City while standing beside a rushing waterfall surrounded by towering trees and birdsong. Every season offers something different. For instance, in the spring wildflowers and deer and baby fawns (if you're paying attention) to brilliant colored autumn leaves and if you're really paying attention, you might see an occasional glimpse of a mature buck during the quieter winter months.
It's one of those places that invites you to slow your pace, breathe a little deeper, and simply enjoy being outdoors.

Dogwood Canyon Nature Park
Where You'll Find It: Near Lampe, Missouri, just south of Branson.
About Dogwood Canyon
Dogwood Canyon Nature Park is one of the most beautifully maintained outdoor destinations in Missouri. Crystal-clear streams, picturesque waterfalls, stone bridges, towering bluffs, and impeccably groomed walking paths make this a wonderful place for a relaxing day outdoors.
Unlike many Ozark trails, everything here feels polished and thoughtfully designed. If you enjoy comfortable walking, scenic overlooks, and a leisurely pace, you'll likely leave impressed. Along the way you'll find waterfalls, trout-filled streams, historic structures, wildlife, and even a herd of American bison if you continue to the far end of the park.
Good to Know
✔ Nearly all of the main trail is flat, wide, and easy to walk.
✔ Electric bikes and tram tours are available if you'd rather explore without walking the entire park.
✔ Parking near the entrance fills quickly, but overflow parking is an easy walk. Guests with mobility needs have closer parking available.
✔ There is a restaurant, gift shop, picnic areas, and clean restrooms, making it easy to spend several hours here.
✔ Don't miss the impressive waterfall overlook near the entrance or the treehouse. BTW, it's worth climbing if your knees don't mind a few flights of stairs.
✔ Admission is required. This is one of the few destinations we feature that isn't free, so be sure to check current ticket prices before you go. Purchasing tickets online in advance may save you money.

Skip the rugged gravel spur trail.
We tried it so you don't have to. 😄 Unless you're looking for a much rougher hike, stay on the beautifully maintained main trail where the scenery is every bit as enjoyable.
Since admission isn't inexpensive, I'd plan to spend most of the day. Bring a picnic lunch (or enjoy the restaurant), take your time, and make the most of your visit. This is one of those places where slowing down is part of the experience.
Why We Love It
Dogwood Canyon may be the most luxurious trail we've ever explored.
It's probably not the place we'd choose when we're craving a rugged Ozark adventure, but when we're in the mood for a peaceful afternoon, gorgeous scenery, and an easy stroll with family or friends, it's hard to beat.
If you've got visitors from out of town, or grandchildren who love waterfalls, treehouses, and spotting wildlife, this is an excellent choice.

Mina Sauk Falls
Where You'll Find It: Taum Sauk Mountain State Park near Ironton, Missouri
About Mina Sauk Falls
Mina Sauk Falls is Missouri's tallest waterfall, but catching it at its best takes a little planning, and a little adventure seeking.
Unlike many waterfalls that flow year-round, Mina Sauk Falls is seasonal. Visit after a good rain and you'll be rewarded with rushing water cascading down the mountainside. Visit during a dry spell, and you may find only the beautiful rock formations where the water usually flows even though you can hear water, you can't see it unless you stop at the right place.
The hike itself is part of the experience. Massive granite boulders, scenic overlooks, and Missouri's highest point make this one of the most memorable trails in the state.
We've made the trip three different times, even though it's more than six hours from home, which probably tells you everything you need to know.
Good to Know
✔ The waterfall is best visited shortly after a good rain.
✔ The upper trail loop is about 3 miles and includes rocky, uneven terrain.
✔ Trekking poles and sturdy hiking shoes are highly recommended.
✔ If heights make you uncomfortable, portions of the loop include steep drop-offs with narrow trail sections.
✔ Watch carefully for trail markers through the boulder fields. It's surprisingly easy to lose the trail.
✔ The overlook provides spectacular scenery, but don't expect a wide-open view of the waterfall itself. Much of the water is hidden below the surrounding cliffs and trees.
⭐ K. Kay's Slow Path Tip
If your goal is simply seeing the falls, I'd hike the left-hand trail from the trailhead, enjoy the overlook, then return the same way instead of completing the full loop.
The back side of the loop is considerably more challenging, especially if the rocks are damp.
And if rain is in the forecast...
Maybe wait until afterward. 😊
The waterfall will be prettier, and the trail will be much safer.
Why We Love It
This isn't one of Missouri's easiest hikes.
It isn't one I'd recommend to everyone.
But if you're an experienced hiker who enjoys a little adventure, incredible Ozark scenery, and exploring Missouri's highest mountain, Mina Sauk is absolutely worth experiencing at least once.
It's one of those hikes you'll still be talking about on the drive home.

"We've hiked this trail several times. On one visit, a friend slipped on the wet rocks just before reaching the overlook and broke her arm. She wasn't wearing hiking shoes or using trekking poles, and the light rain had made the rocks surprisingly slick.
It was a good reminder that beautiful trails still deserve respect.
Take your time, wear proper footwear, and don't hesitate to use trekking poles. They're worth every ounce."
Some adventures aren't about getting to the waterfall. They're about discovering what you're capable of along the way.
Owl's Bend
Where You'll Find It: Near Winona, Missouri, along Highway 19 in the Ozarks
About Owl's Bend
Some places aren't famous.
They're simply beautiful.
Owl's Bend is one of those hidden Ozark treasures that most travelers drive right past without ever knowing it exists. Instead of towering waterfalls, you'll discover crystal-clear water tumbling over moss-covered rocks, creating a series of peaceful cascades that seem to stretch forever.
It's quiet. It's uncrowded. And if you arrive early enough, you may have the entire place to yourself except for the sound of rushing water and birdsong.
This is exactly the kind of place we love discovering.
Good to Know
✔ The trail is short and relatively easy once you find it.
✔ The trailhead is not well marked and is surprisingly easy to miss.
✔ Google Maps will get you close, but you'll want to slow down as you approach. Look carefully for a small pull-off before the bridge.
✔ Cell service can be limited in this area.
✔ This is one of the few places where I'd strongly recommend treating your clothing with Sawyer Permethrin before your visit. The scenery is spectacular...the ticks are enthusiastic.

"If you can't locate the trailhead, don't be shy about asking a local. Around here, folks usually know exactly where Owl's Bend is and are happy to point you in the right direction.

Owl's Bend isn't about checking another famous destination off your list.
It's about slowing down long enough to discover one of those quiet places that somehow never seems to make the travel brochures.
The rushing water, emerald moss, and peaceful Ozark setting make it one of our favorite hidden discoveries in southern Missouri.
Not every beautiful place has a gift shop, paved sidewalks, or a crowd. Sometimes the best adventures begin with a gravel pull-off and a little curiosity.
Johnson's Shut-Ins
Where You'll Find It: Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park near Middle Brook, Missouri
One of Missouri's most fascinating natural wonders, Johnson's Shut-Ins is where ancient volcanic rock narrows the Black River into a maze of rushing chutes, deep pools, and smooth rock formations unlike anywhere else in the state.
About Johnson's Shut-Ins
So...what exactly is a shut-in?
A shut-in forms when a river is "shut in" or squeezed between extremely hard, erosion-resistant rock. Instead of carving a wide river valley, the water is forced through narrow channels, creating rushing cascades, swirling pools, and polished rock formations. Missouri is home to several shut-ins, but Johnson's is the largest and most famous.
You'll hear the rushing water before you ever see it.
From the overlook, the view is absolutely breathtaking. Looking out across the ancient rock formations and sparkling pools, it's easy to understand why this is one of Missouri's most photographed natural attractions. Turn around, and you'll find yourself surrounded by the unique pine trees, glades, and rugged beauty of the St. Francois Mountains.
The easy boardwalk leads to the overlook, making this incredible view accessible to almost everyone. Beyond the overlook, additional trails allow hikers to explore more of the park. The accessible overlook is about a quarter-mile from the main parking area along a paved path and boardwalk.

✔️ Admission is free.
✔️ The overlook is reached by an easy ¼-mile paved trail and boardwalk from the main parking area.
✔️ Many visitors enjoy swimming in the shut-ins during the summer, but the rocks are extremely slick and uneven. Water shoes and careful footing are highly recommended, and always pay attention to river conditions.
✔️ Don't miss the excellent Black River Center. The exhibits explain how the shut-ins were formed, the area's wildlife, and the fascinating history of this remarkable landscape.
✔️ There are plenty of picnic areas, making this an easy place to spend several hours.

Even if you don't plan on getting in the water, don't skip the overlook.
Stand there for a few minutes and take it all in. Listen to the rushing water. Turn slowly in a full circle. Behind you are rugged Ozark forests and unique glades. In front of you is one of the most incredible geological landscapes in Missouri. It's one of those views that photos simply can't capture.

Johnson's Shut-Ins feels different from almost anywhere else in Missouri.
It's wild, rugged, and unlike the gentle beauty of Missouri's springs. The sound of the rushing river echoes through the gorge, while the billion-year-old volcanic rock tells a story that's been unfolding long before people ever arrived.
Whether you're hiking, photographing the scenery, or simply standing at the overlook, it's impossible not to appreciate just how extraordinary this place really is.

After exploring Johnson's Shut-Ins, consider driving a few miles to Taum Sauk Mountain State Park, home to Missouri's highest point and the trail to Mina Sauk Falls. If waterfalls are flowing, it's one of the best one-two combinations you'll find anywhere in the state.
